IKEA Comes to Sheffield

Last year the people of Sheffield’s nearest IKEA store was in Nottingham and Leeds, but according to The Star, the Swedish company had been searching for a perfect spot for a store in South Yorkshire’s biggest city for more than a decade. This year, that store is finally here.

Located on Sheffield Road, Tinsley, near Meadowhall Retail Park, the superstore will open its doors to the public for the first time on 28 September, just in time to welcome University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam’s students whom will be arriving the city to start a new academic year on 25 September. IKEA is expecting students to flock in to make the most of its wide range of products that will transform their student flats or houses into homes. Students are also invited to the unique student event, held on 4 October, which is an opportunity for students to join in the celebrations of the opening by taking part in multiple activities such as a cooking class, a ‘Styling your Space’ workshop and food sampling, as well as a chance to listen to live music and even a stand-up comedian.

However, if you can’t wait until October, IKEA has organised many events across the city to further celebrate the grand opening. The Wonderful Everyday Tour includes various mini-events and installations that have already been going on around Sheffield since 11 September and will continue until 28 September. Events include a family BBQ on Sunday, 17 September in Weston Park and a gallery of artwork by Sheffield-based artists in the Arundel Gate underpass on Wednesday, 20 September.

The new store also offers a Family Preview Day on 26 September, as well as a guided tour which will show customers how Sheffield’s IKEA has been tailored to suit the way people live in the steel city. Furthermore, even after the store’s opening the celebrations continue with activities that everyone are welcome to participate in, such as a beginner’s yoga class on 12 October and a plant growing workshop on 17 October. IKEA truly is more than just your average homeware store and a trip there is more than just your average shopping spree – it is a fun, friendly experience to enjoy with family or friends while choosing uniquely designed products that will be cherished and shared for a lifetime.
